I have loads of wonderful and crazy memories from the days spent there, but two things really stuck out in terms of my recovery.
One of my friends said to the other, then later shared with me, that "Wes is still a lot of fun even though he's sober!" It was nice to hear. I know I'm a lot of fun but I wouldn't want anyone to assume I would be a killjoy. Anyway, this made me smile.
The second to last night was a performance by the very popular Dave Matthews Band. They didn't disappoint, they were great. The last song they did, however, as part of their encore was particularly special. DMB performed a cover of Sly & the Family Stone's "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)". I'd never heard the song before but was caught up in the groove and sang the chorus along with the crowd... "Thank you- For letting me- Be myself- Again!"
I'm really surprised how quickly and how easily the last six months has passed by. Life has its struggles and I know that some patients haven't had an easy time with recovery but I'm lucky that for me it has gone well and has been pain-free.
I continue to visit the Schick Recovery Group meetings, though life seems to be getting busier so I'm down to going once every two weeks on average now. The camaraderie of the graduates and patients is so valuable and I try to occasionally have a little something helpful to share. And I appreciate what the others have to say too, the people are incredible.
Life is good. We're planning summer parties and big vacations (and more hopefully music festivals) and the last thing on my mind is drinking.
Six months! Wow! Thank you, Schick, for helping me be myself again.

Hey Man:
I just read your whole blog. Thank you for sharing the intimate details of your time at Schick and more importantly, your recovery. Congrats and it is great!!
I am thinking about going to Schick (I have been reading about it on internet) but for a drug issue that no one knows about. So I appreciate you sharing how the treatment worked for your addiction. I too feel - that I believe I will just feel "normal" after stopping this drug. That is how it was for me when I stopped alcohol just because I got too drunk too often..but I was not addicted to it. So in short, I am saying I can relate your post re: feeling normal....and that is what I hope!
Thanks again for sharing.

Nicko88,
Thank you for the comment and I am thrilled you are considering Schick. Certainly everyone's experience is different but I will share this with you: Schick is the only treatment center I have ever "attended" but I've met many other patients at Schick who previously went through other programs, often multiple times. They all seem to say that Schick was the only program where when they left they didn't want to use.
I'm lucky that Schick was the first place I considered.
The program worked for me and I'm happy to share my experiences if it can help others. Good luck, Nicko88, I hope not only are you are able to get yourself on track, but that you'll also find happiness.
Wes - I was thinking about you this holiday...how has the 1 year mark been? Would you still recommend Schick?
One year ago I was at Schick, wow time has flown!
I will post an update to my blog on January 6, as that date has significance as the day I officially consider my one year anniversary.
But a sneak peek: Sobriety continues to be as normal as breathing and I recommend Schick to anyone who needs help putting a substance problem to rest.
thanks for the peak ... I can't wait to congratulate you then!
